Steenbras Deep

Steenbras Deep is a dive site situated at the southern end of a long ridge stretching for about 2.5 nm in a North-South direction about 3 nm miles offshore from Steenbras mouth on the eastern side of False Bay. Because of the long boat trip to the site, exposure to wind and waves and the unpredictable visibility, this site is not dived very often.

Depth range from 17 meter at the most southern pinnacle with a maximum around 30m. The pinnacle is irregular in shape, with a large number of cracks, grooves and indentations. At the bottom the sand is coarse and shelly. There is a good variety of invertebrate life on the reef but is very different to the reefs on the western side of the bay.

There is no specific time of year for diving this site. The best conditions would be with a low swell and light winds. If the visibility at the surface is bad, a light can be useful, not only to bring out the magnificent colours but also to help in keeping a lookout for your buddy. Because of the depth and conditions, this dive site is for advanced divers only.

We are fortunate enough to have an IANTD instructor at Bellville Underwater Diving Club and through IANTD we can offer some of the best quality SCUBA training in sport diving as well as technical deep diving and rebreather diving.

Some Of Our Activities

Project Aware International Coastal Cleanup Day

Each year the Bellville Underwater Diving Club takes part in the Project Aware International Coastal Clean-up Day in helping to keep our oceans clean.

Interclub Potjiekos and Canon Dive Competitions

Each year we take part in the annual Interclub Potjiekos Competition between Bellville Underwater Club, False Bay Underwater Club and Old Mutual Sub-Aqua Club. At this event the clubs also compete against each other with a canon dive competition.

Away Weekends

The BUDC organizes at least two camping away weekends during the year at which we have a Spearfishing competition and a potjiekos competition between the Spearo's and the SCUBA members.
